Romessa K is a multidisciplinary artist, currently based in Lahore. She graduated in Fine Arts with a major in printmaking followed by Masters in Visual Arts degree from National College of Arts, 2014. During her post graduate, she received an artist residential grant from Rockefellers Brothers fund by New York Foundation of Arts in New York with an after exhibition in Chelsea. On the completion of her Master’s degree, she continued to join the National College of Arts as a visiting faculty. In 2015 she was invited by the Indian government with four female artist fellows to collaborate with Indian artists for an exhibition at the Indian National Council of Arts, Delhi.
Her recent body of work draws inspiration from the ancient tradition of stone carving—an art form with a history spanning at least 10,000 years. Rooted in the cultural landscape of Punjab, where the practice of chiseling marble for grave markers remains vibrant, she explores the regional craft known locally as sang tarashi. In this series, she engages with the forms and inscriptions created by local sang tarash (stone carvers), analyzing their visual language and diacritics as a means to understand the evolution of language in both its verbal and visual expressions. Through this process, she reimagines traditional motifs and techniques, seeking to revive and reinterpret the craft within a contemporary context.
