About Artist and Work Process:
Mavra’s work is the statement of an eccentric and rebellious woman in a constricting patriarchal society dictated by strict norms. She uses crowded compositions to depict the chaos of the public spaces, and how these crowds place limits on a woman’s daily movement and activities. She uses vivid colors, scale, perception and semiotics that we usually ignore to attract viewer’s attention to mundane scenes which represent her imagination and visceral response to these mundane surroundings. At the same time she adds hybrid figures and loud characters to make the viewers uncomfortable. The end result of her completed work give an effect of satire mixed with dark humor to create a socio-political message challenging power and authority.
