Umna is a Visual Artist, from Rohri, a small town in Sindh, Pakistan. Umna did her Bachelors in Visual Arts with Distinction from National College of Arts, Lahore. She majored in Miniature Painting and also took Art Writing, Performance Art and Calligraphy as minor subjects. After her graduation, she has exhibited her works at O Art Space, VM Art Gallery, Ejaz Art Gallery, E- exhibitions, Alhamra Arts council, Gallery 6 (Islamabad) and is continuing to create work for upcoming Art exhibits.
Along with her Art practice, Umna is working as an independent Curator and has curated few Art exhibitions. During her undergraduate study, She did her internship at Canvas Gallery Karachi and also assisted senior Artists and Designers. Umna is currently living and continuing her Art practice in Lahore.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is about Color exploration. I am curious about how many tones I can create or can be created from one color. Convinced that Color is not a lifeless thing, but a creature that moves swiftly and nicely from one form to the next. I create lines, squares and other forms, taking inspiration from landscapes, which gives sense of structure to what I want to do with Color. Setting up these compositions as spaces, my intention is to fill tones in them. At first it’s just huge block of color but longer viewing reveals more than one tone. Each line or milimeter square has a tone no other has, and that is painting for me, the non-objective and unintentional strokes and just creation— discoveries.
