Meherunnisa A is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores material storytelling to reconstruct lost histories and reimagine identity. Born in Peshawar, Pakistan—a city shaped by migration and displacement—her practice is rooted in place, poetry, and the enduring resilience of her community. At the core of her work is the art of stone mosaic, drawing from the 16th-century Florentine tradition of Pietra Dura, or “painting in stone.” Expanding on this lineage, Meherunnisa blends it with sculpture, verre églomisé, scagliola, cloisonné, lapidary, and intricate metalwork, forming a richly layered visual language inspired by Indo-Persian painting traditions. Her pieces explore themes of memory, migration, and transformation, positioning stonework as a dynamic medium that bridges past and present.

Meherunnisa collaborates with local and displaced Afghan artisans, continuing a legacy of craftsmanship initiated by her mother, Farhana Asad, over three decades ago. These artistic traditions serve not only as preservation but as resistance—reclaiming Pashtun narratives and reconstructing cultural identity on a global stage. Like a mosaic, her work brings together fractured histories, fostering spaces of healing and renew
