Gardens of Reflection: A Journey through Qinza Najm’s Imagination

April 1, 2024

Amidst the disharmony of urban life, where concrete jungles suffocate the spirit and solitude becomes a distant dream, gardens emerge as sanctuaries for the soul, summoning us with their lush embrace. In the words of the poet Rumi, ‘Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.’ Qinza Najm’s exhibition, ‘(In)accessible Gardens,’ displayed at ArtSoch gallery in Lahore in early March, tenderly echoed this sentiment, inviting viewers to navigate the delicate landscapes of their inner temples while imagining the tangible manifestations of these cherished retreats.

The show is composed of 10 steel pieces that are painted on, laser cut and manipulated to create dream-like, almost celestial gardens from the artist’s process of both gestural and representational art. The subject matter includes trees, women and Urdu words. The show includes an installation of a fenced space with grass to sit on, and a steel suitcase open for the laser cut words of Mir Taqi Mir: baghban bagh nahi tera, keh hai wo gulistan mera. Jahan rahoon wahin khazaan, wahi bahar chahiye (Gardener, this garden does not belong exclusively to you, because I too partake of its joys.

Bodhisattvas may be represented as deities that can be considered equivalent to Buddha in knowledge. Interestingly some visual manifestations of these bodhisattvas have no gender at all while others such as in the Far East have fused with local traditions and folklore so that they resemble beautiful female divinities who are worshipped for their compassion, ability to sacrifice and grant children.

Arresting artwork

17TH JANUARY 2022

ArtSoch, in the heart of Gulberg, one of the city’s busiest commercial areas, promises to support emerging artists and breathe new life into the country’s art scene. While most of the walls were hung with more traditional work referencing local architecture and beautiful landscapes, one piece stood out, in large part because, for the first half of the launch, it was flipped over, facing the wall.

Art Review: Vision Weavers by Mariam Hanif Khan

July 01, 2021

ArtSoch Contemporary is Lahore’s most recent addition, opening its doors on MM Alam Road, one of the busiest commercial districts in the area. Their inaugural exhibition titled “Vision Weavers”, has twenty-six artists who are engaged in teaching and curation as well as creating their own artworks.

Contemporary art in Pakistan

JULY 3, 2021

‘Vision Weavers’ was not an ordinary art exhibition. It was a collaboration of 26 different artists from all over Pakistan documenting the diversity of their art practice, mediums and multiplicity of views in modern Pakistan. As an art novice I have felt that strict constraints on freedom of expression have stagnated the scope of artwork found in local art galleries and city streets.
