Ethereal Light: The Art of Fluid Expression

The material comes alive on the canvas through the play of light, delicately breaking and traveling through each form and wave crafted by this refined artist. Abstract paintings, often in soft whites or iridescent hues, offer a tactile experience where light takes center stage. As time passes, light transforms the artwork, inviting viewers to witness its shifting essence.

These minimalist pieces create a seamless flow within a space, bringing calm, freedom, and serenity. Acting as windows to an ethereal realm, the light dances across textures, illuminating every corner with its radiant glow. They effortlessly brighten any environment, offering a meditative experience that touches the soul and transforms the surroundings. The interplay of color, form, and light invites a personal dialogue between the artwork and the observer, making each encounter a unique journey.

Meet The Artist

Anusha Ramchand

Biography & General Practice

Anusha Ramchand (b. 1995, Hyderabad) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based between Karachi, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom. She graduated with distinction in Fine Art from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 2018, majoring in painting, and is now pursuing her master’s degree. Ramchand’s artistic practice is defined by her passion for large-scale expression, incorporating a variety of mediums. Her work focuses on themes of identity, space, and the interplay between the two, often articulated through intricate structures and bold, expansive compositions. Since graduating, Ramchand has exhibited her work at leading art spaces in Pakistan, including Canvas Gallery, O Art Space, AAN Gandhara Art Space, and Full Circle Gallery, as well as the Karachi Biennale 02 and Lahore Biennale 02. In addition to her exhibitions in Pakistan, she has also participated in several shows in the UK. Her work has been featured in various magazines and art publications, cementing her status as a recognized voice in the contemporary art scene. Ramchand was the Vasl artist in residence for Taaza Tareen 13 in 2021 and the recipient of the VASL-KKAF Research Grant for 2021-2022. In 2022, she also took part in the Art Otaq Residency in Lahore.

As a Hindu Pakistani artist navigating personal and cultural transitions, her work explores themes of movement, identity, and space. Central to this exploration is the use of cardboard, a material often regarded as cheap, transient, and disposable. In everyday life, cardboard is tied to consumerism: it packages goods, transports them across vast distances, and is then discarded. However, in her work, this material undergoes a profound transformation.

Site- Specific Project Description

Shahi Hammam in Lahore is a space rich in history and cultural fusion. Built in the 17th century during the Mughal era, the Shahi Hammam embodies a meeting point of diverse cultural influences—Islamic, Persian, and South Asian—which converge to create an architectural space that not only serves as a public bath but also as a testament to the region’s layered identity.

Similarly, my work seeks to engage in a dialogue between these converging influences, where Islamic arches and Hindu facades within my structures mirror the Hammam’s historical legacy and cultural fusion. The Shahi Hammam, with its history of providing a space for physical cleansing and renewal, metaphorically mirrors the emotional and cultural cleansing that occurs in the process of migration, adaptation, and creation.

The Shahi Hammam, with its history of providing a space for physical cleansing and renewal, metaphorically mirrors the emotional and cultural cleansing that occurs in the process of migration, adaptation, and creation.

Just as the Hammam has absorbed layers of cultural history while serving as a site of transformation, each piece of cardboard in my structures holds traces of its own journey. Like me, it has migrated, crossed boundaries, and been reshaped by movement.

Its journey parallels my own experience of navigating spaces and cultures, adapting to new environments. By transforming this discarded material into architectural forms, the cardboard becomes a physical manifestation of my personal journey, symbolizing both the fragility of displacement and the resilience required to create a new space for oneself. By contrasting lasting stone with fragile cardboard, my work challenges ideas of sustainability, value, and what we consider permanent.
