Samra Cheema is a Visual Artist and Art trainer based in Lahore, Pakistan.  She did her Master’s degree in Visual Arts in 2018 from Punjab University College of Art and Design, followed by a Diploma in Ceramics from National College of Arts. Since then she has been practicing and working on different art projects as an artist as well as an art trainer with different art institutes & galleries in Lahore.

She is also an emerging Art Speaker and currently working as the International Festival Committee Chairperson of Pakistan in Palestine and has curated her first international exhibition. She was also the Youth Representor on Art, Culture and Heritage in International Virtual Conference 2021.

Samra has won several awards during her career; her accolades include being awarded the Arjumand Award in the Painting category of Emerging Artists of Pakistan by IAF in 2019 as well as the Young Artist of the Year Award from Alhamra Arts council in 2016 and Artist of the Year Award by Voice of Pakistan.

Recently, she exhibited her artwork in 89th International Cultural Exchange of Arts, Norway (27th Edition Virtual Art Show) 2021.She had her first solo exhibition “Longings’ in October 2019 at Shakir Ali Museum Lahore Pakistan and she has been showcasing her artwork as a part of various group shows such as the 3rd international Exhibition “Art for Peace” in Egypt 2020, Urbino in Aquarelle Art Festival inItaly2020, “Pakistan @100”.

She has also exhibited several artworks at World Bank Islamabad, World Virtual Museum London, Gallery 6, Islamabad, Ocean Art Gallery Karachi, Mussawar Art Gallery, Ejaz Art Gallery in Lahore, Unicorn Art Gallery in Lahore, Oyster Art Gallery, Grandeur Art Gallery In Karachi, Shakir Ali Museum In Lahore, Alhamra Art Gallery In Lahore and Bahawalpur Art Council.

Artist statement:

From the moment of the big bang till now, all living organisms are in constant state of evolution and are transitioning from one state to another. Understanding the cycle of nature and these transitions entirely depends on interaction between ecological conditions and the way in which human social groups can distribute themselves across the landscape, landscapes which are currently at risk of massive changes.

Transmuting Beings is an ode to transcendental expression of corals as beings – depicting the emotional hues that reside inside us. Corals are known as colonial organisms, because many individual creatures live and grow while connected to each other. They are also dependent on one another for survival. The symbolic use of bodies in her paintings hint at the common ancestral soul. The theme expresses the core consciousness of all souls that share a common set of feelings and emotions
